Russia: National fish resource ensures the sustainability of the fishing industry in the Kuril Islands

The seaport of Severo-Kurilsk in the north of the Kuril Islands is a support hub for the fishing industry of the Far East. Nearby are such significant fishing subzones as the Sea of Okhotsk, Pacific, Petropavlovsko-Komandor and Kamchatka-Kuril. In these subzones, intensive fishing of popular species of aquatic biological resources is carried out, such as cod, pollock, halibut, greenling, navaga, flounder, squid, etc. For processing catches, there are fish processing plants and enterprises on the island. Federal State Unitary Enterprise “Natsrybresurs”, subordinate to the Federal Agency for Fishery, operates five berthing structures with a total length of about 900 meters in the seaport of Severo-Kurilsk.
