The Australian Native Bee Association (ANBA) has announced that Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) has approved the sale and use of honey produced by Australian native stingless bees, following Amendment No 229 to the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code. FSANZ's review confirmed no health risks if good hygienic practices are followed. The new Food Standard 2.8.3 sets compositional and labelling requirements for native bee honey, differentiating it from European honeybee honey. This approval is expected to boost consumer confidence and increase the production and availability of native bee honey. The ANBA also highlights the cultural significance of native bees to Indigenous Australians and credits various research and health organizations for their support.
