In 2024, potato harvest volumes increased by 6.6% across France, Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium, reaching 24.6 million tonnes. Despite this increase, the average yield per hectare saw a slight decrease, by 0.6 tonnes, compared to the five-year average, due to a delayed season start. The highest yields were reported in France (45.4 tonnes per hectare), while Belgium experienced the largest drop in yield (7%). The expansion of potato cultivation areas by 7.2%, particularly in Germany and France, helped mitigate the impact of lower yields. However, production costs have risen significantly, with an average increase of at least 1,000 euros per hectare, driven by additional costs for seed potato processing and phytophthora treatment, alongside anticipated higher storage costs. These challenges present ongoing concerns for potato growers in the region.
