The Department of Agriculture in collaboration with various partners has unveiled the EPPIC plan, aimed at boosting the consumption of plant-based proteins in the Netherlands to 50% by 2030. The plan includes strategies to increase the yields of high-protein crops like soybeans, peas, field beans, and lupins, and to enhance their disease resistance. The plan also emphasizes the need for the food industry to shift from imported soybeans to Dutch legumes and for consumers to adjust their food preferences. The plan seeks funding of EUR 96 million from the National Growth Fund, in return, it is projected to generate economic growth of EUR 2.6 billion annually. Additionally, the plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen compounds, and decrease the land used for feeding the Dutch by 7%.
