The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) has registered a new banana variety identified in Santa Catarina. The Clarinha banana (SCS455) was discovered spontaneously in the municipality of Luiz Alves, in the Itajaí Valley, an important region for fruit production. Originating from a natural mutation of the caturra banana, the new variety presents a lighter and brighter peel, a characteristic associated with a reduction of approximately 43% in chlorophyll content. This difference helps to delay the darkening of the fruit after harvest and increases its commercial attractiveness. The identification and validation were supported by studies from Epagri, which began in 2018.
