New Zealand onions in UK are cheaper than in their own country

Oddly enough, New Zealand yellow onions are sold cheaper in a British supermarket than in New Zealand itself. A tweet drew attention to the price of onions at Tesco, which were sold for 95p per kilo (€1.11). For comparison, the same onions were sold for $2.99 (€1.68) per kilo at Countdown and $2.39 (€1.34) at Pak'n Save. According to James Kuperus, Chief Executive of Onions New Zealand, the price of New Zealand onions in Britain, representing the total cost of getting the product there, was about $2 per kilo. Individual exporters and growers had to decide for themselves at what price they wanted to sell, he said. "We are not a cheap supplier of onions," he added. “We had a shortage of onions in New Zealand this year due to weather conditions, so we can rule out a New Zealand grower selling cheaply.
