Researchers at the University of Auckland are developing a method to combat varroa mites, a pest that is causing significant damage to honeybee colonies globally, using lasers. The project, led by Dr Francesco Merola and Professor Cather Simpson, is testing the impact of various laser blasts on bees and mites in a lab setting. The goal is to offer beekeepers an affordable and effective way to protect their colonies without resorting to pesticides. The initiative, backed by a $1 million grant from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment's Endeavour Fund, aims to develop a device for use both in New Zealand and internationally.
