Two livestock shipping companies have halted their services to France due to harsh weather conditions, leading to the postponement of 17 consignments carrying around 300 calves each. This has resulted in reduced demand and lower prices for export-type Friesian bull calves in Ireland. Despite this setback, exporters remain optimistic for a swift resumption of normal sailing conditions. The suspension has also led to an increase in dairy bull calves being supplied to slaughter plants. In the first nine weeks of 2023, over 13,000 calves have been slaughtered, marking a new record for this period. Irish calf exports have also seen a significant increase compared to the same period last year, with over 28,000 head exported in the first eight weeks.
