Milpa Alta is a major global producer of nopales, accounting for approximately 80% of Mexico's annual production, with an annual yield of 90-120 tons from 68,500 hectares of land dedicated specifically to the crop. In 2018, Mexico's total production reached 853 thousand tons, with the United States being the primary importer, receiving 51 thousand 598 tons. Other significant importers include South Korea, Belgium, Japan, the Czech Republic, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Milpa Alta's production volume has led to the establishment of the Nopal Verdura Collection Center to increase local producers' sales channels.
