Number of PRRS-free pig farms in Denmark is growing

The Danish pig sector wants to become completely free of the viral disease PRRS as quickly as possible, which causes fertility problems in sows as well as respiratory problems in piglets and fattening pigs. In addition, this virus weakens the general resistance to pathogens, which contributes to higher than necessary use of antibiotics. The goal of the joint Danish pig and health organizations is to have 85 percent of all sow herds in the country and 75 percent of all slaughter pigs free of PRRS by 2025. To monitor progress, it has been mandatory since last year for pig farms to know the PRRS status. In addition, discounts apply for the supply of PRRS-positive piglets and fattening pigs. The result is that the number of companies for which the PRRS status is known has increased rapidly. At the start of data recording, the status of 47 percent of the companies was known.
