October milk production in the US is slightly down from 2022

Milk production was slightly higher than September, but down fractionally from last October. USDA’s National Ag Statistics Service says milk production for the 24 major producing states totaled 17.9 billion pounds, up one-tenth of a percent from last month but down four-tenths of a percent from last year. Production per cow averaged 2,013 pounds for October, which was three pounds less per cow than last October. The number of milk cows on farms was 8.91 million head, down five thousand from last month and down 19-thousand from a year ago.
