Spain has experienced a surge in onion planting, particularly with the Medio Grano variety, due to its low water usage. This has led to a substantial increase in onion supply in the European market, including the Netherlands and Germany, causing prices to plummet to 8-10 euro cents per kilo, below the break-even point. Despite a slight price rise, field prices remain high at 15-20 euro cents per kilogram, which is no longer profitable. Currently, onion prices in the Netherlands remain at 10 cents per kilogram, with no signs of improvement. The situation is attributed to an oversupply of large, high-quality onions, with the Dutch sorter expressing hope that the low prices will stimulate exports.
