Organic milk in Europe: Denmark leads convincingly, the EU is catching up, Bulgaria is just starting to move forward

At the invitation of DG Agri, we met in Denmark with Lase Bage — R&D manager of Øllingegaard Mejeri and Naturmælk, to see on site the model of De Økologiske Mejerier and to compare its results with the situation in Europe and in Bulgaria. We reported on them HERE We decided to make a comparison between Denmark, Bulgaria, and the European Union in the production of organic milk. What do the figures show? Denmark In 2024, organic milk production in Denmark is approximately 635 million kg (2023: 689 million kg), which represents ~11% of the total milk production in the country. In Denmark, organic production and the market for organic products are highly developed — and the consumption of organic food is one of the highest in Europe. European Union The total production of raw milk in the EU is estimated at ~160–161.8 million tons for 2023–2024.
