Overview of the global lime market

The world market for limes is currently experiencing a revival, as the catering industry is reopening in many countries, increasing the demand for this citrus fruit. Markets such as the Netherlands expect this trend to continue in the course of the year, now that the tourism sector is picking up again after the Covid-19 pandemic. Much of the lime supply to the European and US markets currently comes from Brazil and Mexico, despite ongoing shipping problems, while South Africa and Australia focus on their domestic supply. In South Africa in particular, the demand for limes has increased as Mexican cuisine, in which limes are a common ingredient, is becoming more popular in the country. Not all is good news for limes, though, as both Mexico and South Africa have experienced heavy rainfall in their growing areas, severely affecting fruit and decreasing stocks.
