The provision of water for Patagonian livestock generates headaches both in winter and summer. During the hottest months, due to the excessive heating of water, which is already scarce in the region and cannot be easily renewed. And during the colder season, due to the freezing of watering holes. In search of solutions, specialists from INTA Bariloche worked on all kinds of ideas, from the use of solar panels and electric heaters, to systems that stir the water. But the solution ended up being much simpler, cheaper, and more sustainable than it seemed: old refrigerators converted into drinking troughs. These are two models adapted to different needs, but with the same function, and which the technicians in the region have already put into practice and evaluated. After the presentation of the preliminary data, they highlight its potential for expansion in large rural areas of southern Argentina.
