The Ministry of Culture in Peru has declared the traditional production of pisco, a liquor made from grapes, in specific regions to be part of the country's designation of origin. These regions include the coast of Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua, and the valleys of Locumba, Sama, and Caplina, in Tacna. Pisco is made without additives from fresh grape musts. The production process has been inscribed on the 'Indicative List' of the Convention on the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of UNESCO. The ministry emphasized the importance of safeguarding these traditional production systems to preserve the diversity of pisco and the social identities associated with it.
