The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has recognized Peru's potential to lead in the global camelid market due to the quality and variety of its products. The FAO representative in Peru, Mariana Escobar, emphasized this during the launch of the International Year of Camelids 2024. She highlighted the importance of acknowledging the producers of Andean camelids and the high value of alpaca fiber in international markets. The FAO estimates that South America is home to millions of camelids, providing economic opportunities for around 200,000 families.
