The National Commission against Biopiracy (CNB), chaired by the National Institute for the Defense of Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi), identified a total of 42 patent processes around the world in 2020, 75% more than what was registered in 2019. These cases of possible biopiracy were identified in patent offices located in China, United States of America, Japan, Brazil, Australia, France, Uruguay, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Philippines, Taiwan, among other. The biological resources of Peruvian origin affected are maca, blood of grade, sacha inchi, ungurahui, purple corn, camu camu, tara, pasuchaca, yacón, aguaje, among others. The Peruvian Foreign Ministry and Indecopi have filed oppositions to 34 of these cases, in order to prevent them from becoming improperly patents in the future.
