The Philippines is importing 16,000 metric tons of fresh yellow onions to avoid a shortage during the holiday season. The importation, approved by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., is expected to address the depleted local stocks and help stabilize market prices. The first batch of imported onions is set to arrive by the end of this week or early next week, with the entire shipment expected to arrive by December 2024, avoiding the harvest season in January 2025. The local supply of red onions is expected to last until March 2025.
