Pig farming is contributing to environmental and health issues due to high ammonia emissions. Ammonia, an environmental pollutant with adverse effects on public health, animal welfare, and production performance, is released during the breakdown of manure and the use of ammonia-based fertilizers. A 2022 study by Wenhao Qin's team at Huazhong Agricultural University revealed that ammonia exposure can cause lung damage in pigs, leading to inflammation and oxidative stress. Another study by Xiaotong Wang's team in 2020 found that short-term exposure to high ammonia levels can cause nasal mucosal hyperplasia and lung damage in pigs. Low concentrations of ammonia can still harm humans and animals by irritating the respiratory tract and affecting various organs.
