Spain: Potato market during 2022

Potato production in Spain has fallen compared to the previous campaign, having reached its historical minimum with 1,942,778 tons (-7%). This is due to both spring weather and high summer temperatures. The effects of the drought have also affected the European market with drops in the volumes harvested in the main producing countries, mainly France. Potato consumption pending abroad with an unfavorable trend in recent years.
Exports from Spain have reached a new record during the 2022 campaign (until Sep) with €105.5 million, although imports have practically doubled the value of our shipments. At the EU level, our main supplier is France, which continues to grow throughout the national territory. Seed potato dependent on imports to meet domestic demand. After the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union (Brexit), the Netherlands is substituting shipments originating from this Third Country. The demand for potatoes for consumption in the community market continues to expand during 2022, essentially dominated by the quantities supplied by France (38%), Germany (27%) and the Netherlands (12%) and where Spain continues to lose market share both in volume and value.
