Georgian potato growers are facing challenges from a surplus of potatoes from the 2020/21 season and a predicted large harvest for the 2021/22 season due to low prices and increased production in Turkey. To cope with this, some farmers have planted unsold potatoes in hopes of future price recovery, while others have imported high-quality seed potatoes to differentiate their produce and command higher prices. Despite logistical and marketing challenges, exports to Azerbaijan have been attempted. From January to April 2021, Georgia's seed potato imports were the second largest in the past five years, and farmers who used imported seed potatoes and focused on quality saw a 27% increase in average earnings compared to other farmers, with the market willing to pay double for such potatoes.
