Cherry growers in the northern part of Extremadura, Spain are facing significant losses due to timely rainfall that has caused cracking in the fruits, rendering around 12,000 tons unsellable just before the harvest. The expected loss is approximately 25 million euros, which is not covered by insurance for over 90% of the crop. This is the third consecutive year of severe losses for the sector, attributed to adverse weather conditions and low insurance rates. Spain grows cherries across 28,000 hectares, with Cáceres in Extremadura being a major region, and this year's expected yield is only 35,000 tons, down from a normal 50,000 tons.
