In November 2022, China made a significant purchase of 477,000 tons of rapeseed, marking the largest purchase since January 2019 and surpassing the average monthly purchase of 100,000 tons. This event has sparked discussions among agro-analysts about the future of the global rapeseed market. Marlene Bersch of Mercantile Consulting Venture sees this demand as a sign of things to come, driven by the higher profitability of rapeseed oil over meal. Meanwhile, Wayne Palmer of Exceed Grain Marketing views the Chinese purchase as an exception, attributed to the drop in rapeseed prices, but anticipates steady demand from processors worldwide in 2023. This demand, coupled with lower than expected Canadian supply due to a drought, is expected to keep prices high. Australia has also reported a record harvest of 7.62 million tonnes of rapeseed despite flooding challenges.
