In An Bien district, Kien Giang province, Vietnam, the shrimp and crab farming industry is facing severe losses due to mass deaths caused by prolonged heat waves. These extreme weather conditions have led to a spike in water temperatures and salinity levels, with some areas recording salinity as high as 30‰, significantly above the optimal range of 10 - 20‰ for shrimp and crab farming. This environmental stress has resulted in considerable financial setbacks for local farmers, with many earning much less than the previous year. The problem extends beyond An Bien district, affecting over 642 hectares of shrimp and crab farms across Kien Giang province due to similar adverse weather conditions and saltwater intrusion.
