A new ordinance has been enacted to address the African swine fever (PSA) emergency after infected wild boar carcasses were found near pig farms and sausage factories in Piacenza and Parma. This ordinance introduces new restriction zones in line with European legislation. The USA has banned the import of short-matured cured meats from these areas, following Canada's similar move in April. However, PDO Parma raw ham, which requires at least 14 months of maturation, is excluded from the ban. Despite the PSA emergency, sales of Parma Ham, especially sliced ham in trays, have increased significantly, particularly in international markets. The Italian pig herd contraction has led to a 5% reduction in production in 2023 compared to the previous year.
