A Grains Australia project will look to identify export opportunities for Australian canola meal in a move that could help unlock value for the emerging canola biofuel sector. While the canola oil will be the feedstock to manufacture biofuel, for crushing projects to be successful it is important that there are solid markets for the meal by-product. It is expected Australia's domestic canola meal production, currently sitting at 640,000 tonnes, could rise as high as a million tonnes in coming years with the increase in local crush capacity. Grains Australia will look to identify export opportunities for the meal, with the Asian livestock sector and the New Zealand dairy industry two early priorities. Australian Oilseeds Federation (AOF) board member Jon Slee said there was plenty of reason for optimism in attempts to build up the canola meal industry.
