The Dominican Republic (DR) saw a significant increase in U.S. pork imports in 2022, driven by African swine fever causing a sharp decline in the country's domestic pork production. U.S. pork exports to the DR surged to a record 85,550 metric tons, valued at $233.6 million, marking a 46% increase in volume and a 55% increase in value from the previous year. As the DR's self-sufficiency in pork production drops, there is growing potential for U.S. pork to meet the demand in the retail sector. The U.S. pork industry is actively exploring various opportunities within the DR market, focusing on high-quality cuts and convenience-based products, with support from the National Pork Board, the soybean checkoff, and U.S. Department of Agriculture programs.
