The Netherlands is experiencing a severe shortage of red onions due to high demand, small onion sizes, and sorting losses, leading to a scarcity of supply across Europe. The situation is worsened by reduced harvesting outside the EU and limited supply from Central Asia and New Zealand. As a result, onion prices are soaring in many countries, with some imposing export bans. Ukraine, the UK, and Saudi Arabia have seen the most significant increases in onion imports. India, China, and Iran have emerged as the leading onion exporters, with substantial growth in their foreign trade in 2022.
