The central government has extended the reduced import duty on refined soybean oil and refined sunflower oil until March 25, 2025, in an effort to curb food inflation in India. The reduction in duty from 17.5% to 12.5% will lower the landed cost of these oils, in turn reducing domestic prices. Food inflation has been a concern, accounting for nearly half of the overall consumer price basket and causing worry for the government as it approaches general elections in 2024.
