Russia's agricultural watchdog, Rosselkhoznadzor, has requested an investigation into the falsification of canned saury products, with 16 regions under suspicion. The investigation was prompted by signs of honey and sorbic acid, a preservative, being added to the fish. The majority of the violations were found to be a lack of sufficient raw materials, leading to the use of cheaper fish like herring in the final product. The investigation will be expanded to include other fish species, and laboratory diagnostics have been launched in almost all Russian regions to test the quality of these products.
