Scientists in Yakutia, Russia, are planning to create a new domestic reindeer breed, with the Arctic State Agrotechnological University leading the project in partnership with the Anabarsky district. The new breed, the fifth in Russia and the fourth in Yakutia, will join the existing Chukchi, Even, and Evenki breeds. The region, which is home to over 176 thousand northern domestic reindeer, operates over 100 reindeer herding farms and ranks third in Russia in reindeer numbers.
