Russian scientists at Don State Technical University have developed a feed additive made from black soldier fly larvae that can replace expensive fish oil and fish meal additives, reducing the cost of fish farms while increasing fish weight gain and survival rates. The larvae-based supplement is said to be as nutritious as expensive fishmeal and fish oil, and can help small and medium-sized aquaculture businesses save up to 10% per year. Additionally, the technology developed at DSTU can be used to process other types of raw materials.
