Korean laver exports are projected to surpass $500 million in the third quarter of this year, hitting an all-time high. This growth, which started from 2017, has seen the number of exporting countries nearly double and the exported countries becoming more diverse. The growth is attributed to the marketing of seaweed as a healthy and vegan snack, especially in Europe, despite concerns about iodine and cadmium content. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is supporting the expansion of seaweed exports through various means, including organic certification and online channels. The Act on the Promotion and Support of the Seaweed Industry is set to be implemented in December, aiming to further boost the competitiveness of Korean laver.
