Straw in Vietnam's Rice Fields With rice production ranking first in Asia and approximately 45 million tons of straw generated annually, of which the Mekong Delta alone contributes over 24 million tons, Vietnam possesses a biomass source with significant economic and energy potential. Research using Sentinel-1 satellite data indicates that Vietnam could produce 2,565MW of electricity from straw, with 24 provinces having the potential capacity of over 30MW, with Kien Giang (now part of An Giang province) leading with 245MW. The national power development plan for the period 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050 sets a target of 1,088MW for biomass power capacity by 2030, reflecting the State's emphasis on the role of biomass energy in the green energy transition. However, this figure remains modest compared to the actual potential of the available straw raw material. Research in Hanoi shows that burning 2,038 tons of straw released 2,399 tons of CO₂, 189.5 tons of CO, 18.87 tons of PM₁₀ ...
