The European Commission agreed to the subsidy scheme last week. Agriculture Minister Jaimi van Essen has disclosed the details of the SEM in a letter to Parliament. The scheme, for which 627 million euros are available, targets dairy farmers who wish to continue farming but are burdened by regulations, manure disposal costs, and emissions. By temporarily voluntarily reducing their operations, they receive financial leeway for business adjustments. Farmers who register can choose to keep 10 to 20 percent fewer cows compared to 2025. The annual compensation for the income loss is 1,606 euros per cow and is determined based on the milk yield of an average cow and the transaction costs. The compensation for relinquishing a phosphate right amounts to 110 euros per right. The rights permanently disappear from the market. The current value for a phosphate right is over 200 euros.
