Hungary is experiencing a significant decrease in apple harvest due to drought and extreme weather conditions, with an estimated 150,000 tons less production compared to last year. The total harvest is projected to be around 330,000 tons, with a range of 300,000 to 350,000 tons, depending on the weather during the harvest period. This decrease is due to stress on the trees and various weather-related crop losses. The apple season started earlier than usual, and prices for apple juice and edible apples are expected to increase by 25-35%. The European Union is also experiencing a weaker apple harvest, with Poland expecting up to 1.5 million tons less production. The Hungarian government is supporting the horticulture sector with new EU tenders and funding for planting and establishing infrastructure, encouraging the cultivation of new apple varieties and the renovation of former plantations.
