[Korean Farmers' News Agency, Reporter Kim Young-min] Improving the breeding system of garlic could shorten the seed garlic production period to one year and reduce the cost of purchasing seed garlic, which is expected to increase its use among farmers. Garlic, which is a bulb from the Allium genus, produces a single-clove garlic when a clove is planted. To obtain a clove-separated garlic, the single-clove garlic must be replanted. In other words, it takes at least two years to produce seed garlic. The National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science has stated that improving the breeding system of garlic in this way can shorten the seed garlic production period to one year. Specifically, cloves weighing less than 0.1g are used.
