Is the shrinkage of asparagus cultivation gradually becoming the most important factor in price formation? The weather may be the most important sales factor, but shrinkage has an undeniable effect on the price.
The following figures are impressive. In 2021, cultivation in Germany still covered 22,300 hectares, in 2024 19,800 hectares. That is a decline of 11%. In the Netherlands, asparagus cultivation has shrunk more sharply from 2,860 to 2,190 hectares since 2021 (up to and including 2024), a shrinkage of 23%.
