Kazakhstan has seen a significant rise in onion production over the last five years, leading to an oversupply and a drop in prices, particularly as the shelf life of onions approaches its end in April. Despite exporting over 86 thousand tons of vegetables to third countries in the early months of the year, the country is facing reduced demand for its onions due to fresh supplies from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Deputy Prime Minister Serik Zhumangarin is looking into non-traditional markets to help mitigate future risks for domestic vegetable producers. This situation is exacerbated by overproduction in neighboring countries and logistical challenges, causing a regional decrease in onion prices since May 2023.
