The Norwegian Veterinary Institute has tested 137 samples of Norwegian bacon sausages for Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) on behalf of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. Only one sample was found to contain STEC. E. coli is usually harmless, but some strains can cause disease in humans. The institute has concluded that the incidence of STEC in bacon sausages is low, despite the small number of samples analyzed.
