So far, French wheat and barley have exported well to China

China has been particularly fond of French cereals in recent months: “in the 2023/23 marketing year, there were 2.4 Mt of barley exported to China at the end of February, compared to 1.3 Mt at the same date in 2022/23 and 2.1 Mt in 2021/22", underlines Adèle Dridi, economic studies manager at FranceAgriMer. In fact, the Middle Kingdom has replaced its local corn and Argentinian barley with French barley, Argentina “having almost finished its commercial campaign” and offering much fewer volumes recently. As for soft wheat, our exports to China for this campaign currently reach 1.8 Mt, compared to 1 Mt at the end of February 2023 and 2.2 Mt at the end of February 2022. FranceAgriMer expects a slowdown in Chinese demand for here at the end of the campaign, slowdown “confirmed by a downward revision of Chinese imports of soft wheat by the USDA on March 8” and by cancellations of Chinese orders in the United States.
