In 2020, the cultivation of sorghum in the EU experienced an 18% increase, with grain sorghum crops growing by 20% and forage crops by 12%. This trend was particularly notable in Eastern European countries like Ukraine and Russia, reflecting a growing interest in the crop due to its resilience to adverse weather conditions. Despite facing challenging weather in the same year, the average sorghum yield in the EU was 5.62 t / ha. However, yields varied greatly across countries, with some experiencing significant increases while others, such as France and the Black Sea countries, saw declines due to drought. The seed industry has also ramped up production, expanding the cultivation area by 59% for the 2020/2021 season, leading to increased sorghum seed availability for the 2021 sowing campaign.
