South Africa's soybean production has seen a significant increase of nearly 40% in 2021, reaching an all-time high of 2.2 million tonnes this marketing year. This surge is attributed to a record planted area and favorable weather conditions, resulting in a record oilseed production and a substantial increase in oilseed meal production. The growth in soybean cultivation is celebrated by Gerhard Scholtmeier, chairman of the Protein Research Foundation, who has advocated for soybeans in South Africa for two decades. The challenges and successes of soybean production in the country, including the impact of seed retention and the benefits of rotary cropping, have played a crucial role in establishing South Africa as a significant player in the global soybean industry.
