South African mandarin exports are projected to grow by nearly 8% in the 2022/23 season, reaching a record 560,000 tonnes due to increased production and strong international demand. The European Union and the United Kingdom are the largest markets, accounting for 45% of exports, followed by Russia and the United States, which has seen a fourfold increase in imports under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) in the last five years. Despite the export focus, local consumption of mandarins is expected to rise marginally to 48,000 tons in 2022/23, thanks to better pest control leading to higher quality fruit and reduced waste.
