(Seoul=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Yoon-gu = The Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency announced on the 30th that the quarantine negotiation for the export of Korean grapes to the Philippines, which has been ongoing since 2007, has been concluded, and exports will commence from next year.
The agency emphasized that the conclusion of this negotiation is significant as it expands the Southeast Asian market base for Korean grapes, which are already seeing increased exports to Taiwan and the United States.
To address concerns about pests and diseases raised by the Philippines regarding the export of Korean grapes, the agency has been in talks to establish management plans. In August of last year, a local survey was conducted by inviting Philippine quarantine officials to inspect domestic grape orchards and export warehouses, and these efforts culminated in the conclusion of the negotiation.
To export grapes to the Philippines, quarantine requirements such as orchard and export warehouse registration, pest surveillance, and inclusion of export plant quarantine certificate details must be met.
The agency plans to implement subsequent procedures for export support, including the promulgation of an ordinance reflecting the agreed quarantine requirements with the Philippines and the implementation of tailored farmer education.
With the conclusion of this negotiation, the number of Korean agricultural products that can be exported to the Philippines has increased to eight items, including apples, pears, tangerines, onions, citrus fruits, paprika, and strawberries.
