A new Spanish royal decree, Royal Decree 159/2023, has been published, amending previous decrees on animal welfare, especially focusing on pigs. The decree aims to minimize the need for piglet tail docking by setting new standards for animal density, food, water, and environmental conditions. Existing farms have two years to comply with these regulations. The decree also bans most procedures causing injury, with some exceptions like tooth trimming and partial tail docking, under certain conditions. It also stipulates that only a veterinarian or a trained individual can perform these procedures. The decree is set to be implemented on March 8, 2023.
