Due to an African swine fever outbreak in wild boars, Germany, previously the top market for EU pork production, is unable to export to China. As a result, the EU has shifted production to Spain, which is ASF-free. In 2021, China has been the EU's largest pork product export market, accounting for about 56% of EU pork exports. EU pork product exports to China reached 3.34 million tons in 2020, up 60% compared to 2019. German pork processing company Toennies is building a pork processing and slaughter plant in Spain, set to open in 2023, which will slaughter 2.4 million heads/year and only export products to North America, Japan, and Asia.
