Spanish agro-food and fishery exports reached a record high of 53,848 million euros in 2020, an increase of 4.1% from 2019, despite the pandemic and a decline in international trade. The sector's trade balance increased by 25.8% to 18,693 million euros, accounting for 20.6% of total national exports. The EU remained the primary destination for these exports, accounting for 63% of the total. However, exports to third countries, especially China, saw an 8.5% increase. Despite this, the sector faced a 22.5% decrease in volume and 24% decrease in value in the first four months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020, highlighting the difficulty in consolidating new markets after the Russian veto on imports of fruit and vegetables from the EU.
