Spain was again the first cereal importer in the EU in 2024/25

Community grain imports recorded an 8% drop in the 2024/25 campaign (which ended on June 30) compared to the previous one, standing at 30.6 million tons, according to European Commission data. Of that volume, 37.45% was destined for Spain, which imported 11.46 million tons from third countries and was the EU's leading grain importer (although its share decreased compared to the previous campaign, when it reached 43% with 14.7 million tons). In 2024/25, Spain repeated as the main importer of soft wheat (3.7 million tons), barley (316,425 tons), corn (7.23 million), rye (7,172 tons), and oats (37,880 tons). The decrease in community grain imports was due to a significant drop in foreign purchases of soft wheat, durum wheat, and barley, while corn imports grew slightly. Ukraine remained the primary corn supplier to the community market, with 10.9 million tons, though with a much lower share than the previous campaign (55.6% in 2024/25 compared to 70.2% in 2023/24).
